WOMEN'S FLAG FOOTBALL PLAYS INAUGURAL SEASON
Marian University got its first taste of football with the women's flag football program playing its inaugural season.
The Sabres went on to finish the season 10-4 (.714) and outscored its opponents 314-127 for the season. After playing its first game at hom against Purdue Northwest, Marian quickly earned its first victory in program history with a convincing road win over North Park. The firsts continued as later that weekend Marian hosted its first triangular and posted the first shutouts in program history defeating UW-Oshkosh and Purdue Northwest.
After a trip to Aurora, Marian then rattled off a six-game winning streak heading into the NACC Tournament. Marian opened the inaugural conference tournament and gave Aurora its toughest test of the season forcing overtime after a scoreless regulation. The two sides traded touchdowns but the Sabres were unable to convert a two-point try to drop the postseason match-up. The Sabres bounced back in a big way, however, defeating Benedictine 34-0 in the consolation game.
Marian was led all season long by
Daniela Chaname who was a ball hawk on both the offensive and defensive side. Chaname finished the season with five rushing touchdowns, one passing, three receiving, and a punt return for 10 total scores. On the defensive side, she had a team-high 12 interceptions.Â
Holly Goodwin proved to be one of the top quarterbacks in the NACC throwing for 1,758 yards and 29 total touchdowns. Her top threat through the air proved to be
Kendall Graves who finished with 764 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns. Defensively, the Sabres were led by
Raegan Montello had 79 total tackles and five interceptions, three of which she returned for touchdowns.Â
Anna Riley and
Nyedeng Awak gave quarterbacks nightmares with Riley recording 11 sacks and Awak 10.
