(Fond du Lac, WI) – Marian University split their home and NAC opener on Saturday afternoon at Herr-Baker Field. The Sabres fell 17-12 in an offensive slugfest in game one and finished with a 19-9 victory in seven innings in game two.
Marian is now 3-11 overall and 1-1 in the Northern Athletics Conference. Dominican is 6-8 overall and 1-1 in the NAC.
In game one, the Stars capitalized on two Sabre errors to score three times in the first. The Sabres answered in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of their own.
Chad Langley (Racine, WI) drove in both runs in the inning with a double.
The Stars grabbed control of the game in the second with seven runs on six hits and two Sabre errors. Marian was able to chip away with a run in the third, four in the second, and one in the fifth to make it a 10-8 ballgame. Langley had another two-RBI double in the fourth.
Dominican pushed their lead to 11-8 in the top of the sixth, but Marian answered with two more in the bottom of the sixth.
Jace Unrein (Racine, WI) hit his first career home run in the sixth ,as he sent one over the right field wall.
Both teams scored a pair of runs in the seventh to make it 13-12. After a scoreless eighth inning, the Stars put the game away in the ninth, scoring four runs.
Marian had several players with standout games at the plate. Langley was 4-for-6 with five RBI's and two doubles.
Josh Klismith (Stevens Point, WI) was also 4-for-6, with three runs scored.
Holtz finished with a pair of RBI's and three runs scored, while Klismith scored three times as well.
Lenny Cunzalo and Chad Polak both had three hits for Dominican.
Marian out-hit the Stars 19-17 in the contest, but committed six errors, while the Stars were flawless on defense.
The Sabres offense stayed hot in game two, as they pounded out 18 hits. The Sabres scored in every inning except the second and scored seven times in the bottom of the seventh to win by virtue of the ten-run rule.
Unrein tore the cover off the ball in the contest, as he was 5-for-5 with seven RBI's, three runs, a home run, and two doubles. Holtz finished with three hits, while Porcaro, Hiller, Klismith, and Martin all recorded two hits. Phil Sies (Antigo, WI) drove in three runs for Marian. Porcaro and Holtz both scored four times.
Jesse Blum (Marion, WI) picked up his first victory of the year. He went 6.2 innings. He struck out seven and gave up ten hits. Six of his nine runs were earned.
Marian is back in action again on Monday, as they will travel to Rockford College. Action is set to begin at 3:00 PM.
