FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Three first half goals paced the Marian University women's soccer team to a 4-0 Norhtern Athletics Conference victory over the visiting Lakeland College Muskies on “Playing for a Cause” night at Smith Fields today, Oct. 4.
The Sabres and Muskies were successful in raising awareness for multiple sclerosis on Tuesday night where both teams sported special uniforms and useful information was provided - all for a great cause.
Plenty of scoring sent the Marian faithful home please as
Taylor Hozeska and
Leisa Conn combined on the first two goals, alternating as scorer and helper on each.
Courtney Schmuhl netted her first goal of the season as the Sabres took a 3-0 lead into halftime.
Mollie Tennessen then made it 4-0 with her first score of the season, an early second half insurance tally for the royal blue and white.
Marian improves to 7-5 overall, 5-2 in the NAC with the win while Lakeland falls to 3-9 (2-4 NAC).
After several attempts were either blocked or saved by Lakeland keeper, Katelyn Streeter, Hozeska finally broke through with her first goal of the year in the 11th minute goal off a cross from Conn. The two then switched roles as Conn added her team-leading eighth score five minutes later to make it 2-0.
In the 27th minute, Schmuhl took a Caitlyn Stumpner cross and headed it in for her first career tally. The Sabres outshot the Muskies 13-3 in the first half and held a comfortable 3-0 advantage into halftime.
The second half was much of the same story as Marian doubled Lakeland's shot total, 12-6. Tennessen headed in a
Jade Koeune corner kick to provide the final score of the game in the 52nd minute.
Marian won the corner kick battle, 9-0, and finished the game with a 25-9 advantage in shots.
The Sabres are in the midst of a busy week as they'll take on Elmhurst College tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in Elmhurst, Ill.
