Box Score
HANCOCK, Mich. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's hockey team erased a 2-0 deficit and
Tom Glomski's short-handed, third period goal won it for the Sabres, who scored four unanswered goals to defeat Finlandia, 4-2, tonight, Nov. 12.
Griffen Hodges spotted the Lions a quick 2-0 lead in the first period when he scored at the 7:50 and 12:48 marks in the opening stanza. The Sabres didn't go quietly, though, as
Matt Berger got one back with 1:09 remaining in the period. Then, with the score tied, Glomski's short-handed goal 31 seconds into the third period won it for the visitors.
Marian, winners of four straight, improve to 5-1 overall, 4-0 in the MCHA. Finlandia falls to 0-6 (0-4 MCHA).
Hodges tallied his second and third goals of the season to give the Lions a fast start, but the hosts were unable to maintain the pressure on the high-octane offense of the Sabres.
Matt Berger's late second period goal ignited the offensive attack and his younger brother, Brian, tied the game with his fifth goal just 48 seconds into the second period.
A
Chris Thompson penalty with 25 seconds left in the second period surely appeared as an advantage for the Lions entering the third period, but Glomski turned the tables with his second goal of the season and eventual game-winner for Marian.
Mitch Kriz then provided some insurance with his first score of the year at the 12:28 mark in the third.
Sabre goaltender
Randy Willis made 30 saves for the win in his first start of the season. Finlandia's
Dainis Vasiljevs, also making his first start, made 38 saves in the losing effort.
The Sabres match last season's 5-1 start and are 4-0 in conference play for the first time since 2008-09 when they also started 4-0.
Marian looks to make it 5-0 in league play when they battle Lawrence University in the first of a two-game set this Thursday, Nov. 17. Puck drops in at 7 p.m. in Appleton.
