ASHLAND, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Seven different Sabres recorded goals, led by
Brendan Roberts who netted two goals including the game-winner, as the Marian University men's hockey team prevailed, 8-4, over host Northland College this evening, Dec. 2.
The Sabres won for the first time in five games, going 0-2-2 previously, and did so in comeback fashion. After falling down 2-0 in the opening 8:54,
Bryce Wilson and
Brian Berger responded with two goals in the final minute of the period to pull the Sabres even before the first intermission. Marian would add four goals in the second and two more in the third to pull away with the win.
The Sabres remain the only unbeaten team in MCHA play, improving their record to 6-2-3 overall, 5-0-2 in MCHA play. Meanwhile, Northland falls to 3-6 (2-5 MCHA).
Andy Kuechler gave the Sabres their first lead of the game at the 7:56 mark of the second period, scoring on assists by
Mitch Kriz and
Tommy Fitzpatrick. David Little of Northland tied the game less than a minute later to make it 3-3 before Roberts scored his first goal of the game 33 seconds after that to regain the lead for Marian.
The Lumberjacks would not go quietly, tying the game for the third and final time on Kraig Wright's sixth goal of the season at the 11:56 mark of the second. Roberts would record his second goal of the period and fourth of the season at the 17:05 mark that would put the Sabres in the lead for good.
Fitzpatrick, who finished with a game-high +4, scored 21 seconds later to give Marian a 6-4 lead heading into the second intermission.
Tanner Burton and
Kevin Darcy would tack on two more insurance tallies in the third period to seal the win.
