Hiller helps Marian earn the split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Aurora, IL) - Marian University lost game one of their doubleheader vs. Aurora University 11-4, but Ryan Hiller made sure Marian went home a winner in game two. The senior tied a school record with five hits in the nightcap and broke the school record by recording 9 RBIs in the game. He recorded two home runs and a pair of doubles to move Marian to 9-7 overall and 6-2 in the Northern Athletics Conference.

Marian fell behind 5-0 in the second inning of game one and didn't score until seventh inning off Aurora ace Drew Gay. The Sabres were out-hit 17-7 in the defeat.

Anthony Porcaro and Phil Seis led the Marian offense in game one with a pair of hits each. Seis drove in a pair and scored a pair. Porcaro recorded his fifth multi-hit game in a row.

Game two saw plenty of scoring as Marian scored at least a run in the first six innings. Marian trailed 5-1 after one inning, but the offense gave them a 9-6 lead after the top of the fourth as they plated six in the fourth. The fourth was highlighted by a Seis double that plated all three runners on base and a Hiller two-run bomb. Matt Schroeder also drove in a run in the frame.

The Spartans made it 9-7 in the bottom of the inning, but Marian scored twice in the fifth and twice in the sixth to make it 13-7. Hiller's double plated two in the fifth, while Porcaro and Seis drove in runs in the sixth.

All that offense almost wasn't enough as the Spartans rallied and scored seven in the seventh to take a 14-13 lead. The inning was capped by a grand slam for the Spartans.

Marian answered Aurora's big inning with four of their own in the eighth, highlighted by Hiller's 3-RBI double.

The Spartans threatened in the bottom of the ninth, by making it 17-15, but Mitchell Gardner came in to preserve the victory with the tying run at the plate.

Cory Martin picked up the victory in relief, despite giving up five runs in his 2.1 innings of work. He is now 1-1 on the year.

Hiller led the offense, but had plenty of help. Will Martin was 5-for-6 with 3 runs scored. Anthony Porcaro was 3-for-3 with 4 runs and 2 RBIs, while Beau Burgert also added 3 hits. Seis added a pair of hits and 4 RBIs, while Garrett Dorn and Schroeder added a pair of hits.

Marian out-hit the Spartans 23-21 in the game.

Marian is back in action on Thursday, as they will host UW-Oshkosh in non-conference action at Herr-Baker Field.
