(Fond du Lac, WI) - Marian University received a pair of great pitching performances and some solid hitting on Saturday en route to their sweep of Maranatha Baptist Bible College. The Sabres crushed the Crusaders 18-0 in five innings in game one and won 7-0 in game two. Marian is now 3-10 overall and 2-2 in the Northern Athletics Conference.
Cherise Waltz (South Byron, WI) was near perfect in game one as she had a perfect game going with two outs in the fifth in the shortened game. She was able to deflect a hard-hit ball back at her, but unable to throw the runner out for the only hit recorded against her. The next batter grounded out to end the game. Waltz struck out a career-high 11 batters in the shutout victory.
She was supported by some solid offense as the Sabres pounded out 16 hits. The offense was led by freshman
Nikki Ponticelli (Gurnee, IL) as she was 4-for-4 with 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
Emily Boehnlein (St. Cloud, WI) was 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs, while
Emilie Jansen (Kaukauna, WI) added three hits.
Niki LaPlant (Sturgeon Bay, WI) drove in three runs for Marian, while
Jenna Whitehead (Kimberly, WI) scored three times.
In game two, Jansen was solid in the circle for Marian, earning her first career victory. She went the distance in the shutout and gave up just two hits. She struck out seven hitters.
Marian wasted no time in this one as they took a 3-0 lead after the first inning. They added two in the third and scored once in the fourth and sixth innings for the victory.
Boehnlein and LaPlant led the offense with two hits apiece.
Brooke Haen (Oakfield, WI) drove in a pair of runs.
