(Fond du Lac, WI) - The Sabres came away with a big sweep of Wisconsin Lutheran College on Saturday at Herr-Baker Field. Marian won game one 5-4 in fifteen innings and won game two 9-2. With the wins, Marian put themselves right back into the thick of things for contention in the the 2011 Northern Athletics Conference Tournament. They are now 13-14 overall and 10-6 in the NAC.
Cory Martin picked up his second victory of the season in game one as he pitched 8.1 innings of scoreless relief. He struck out six and gave up just four hits.
Marian took a 2-0 lead in the third as
Tim Holtz singled and drove in a pair. The Warriors then scored one in the fourth and three in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. Marian tied it in the bottom of the sixth as
Kent Lentz picked up an RBI-single. Marian also scored on a Warrior error.
That's where the game stayed until the 15th inning when Marian won it in dramatic fashion. Holtz led off the inning with a single. On the next play,
Matt Schroeder put down a sacrifice bunt. He was thrown out on the play and Holtz took off for third. The Warriors attempt to throw him out was errant and Holtz came home to score the winning run.
Holtz led the offense in game one with three hits and a pair of RBIs. Schroeder chipped in with a pair of hits.
Jesse Blum got the start and struck out six in six innings.
In game two, Marian jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning on a
Ryan Hiller two-RBI double and never looked back. Lentz drove in a run in the fourth and Holtz hit a solo home run in the fifth to make it 4-0.
Marian then broke it open in the sixth with three runs.
Anthony Porcaro and Holtz picked up RBIs in the inning.
Marian then scored insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Dustin Andrus moved to 5-2 on the year as he struck out four in his eight innings. He gave up just the two earned runs on six hits.
Once again, Holtz led the offense, going 3-for-3 with a pair of runs and RBIs. He had plenty of help as Hiller was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and
Will Martin was 3-for-4. Lentz chipped in with a pair of hits.
Marian is back in action again tomorrow as they will play at Lakeland College. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM.
