(Fond du Lac, WI) - Marian University got a pair of great starts today out of freshman Brett Hogan (Prairie du Chien) and senior Jesse Blum (Marion, WI) in their sweep of Rockford College. Their starts, along with some solid work from the bullpen, gave Marian a 5-4 win in game one and a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.
In game one, Rockford jumped on the board in the top of the first, but Marian answered with a pair in the bottom half of the inning. Garrett Dorn (Kaukauna, WI) hit a bases loaded single, which plated a pair.
In the second, Marian made it 3-1 as Ryan Hiller's (Marshfield, WI) sacrifice fly plated Will Martin (Villa Park, IL). Anthony Porcaro (Burlington, WI) then gave Marian some breathing room in the fifth as he hit a two-RBI double to make it 5-1.
The Regents made it interesting though, scoring one in the sixth and another two in the seventh.
Hogan gave up four runs (three earned) in his seven innings of work. He is now 1-1 on the year. He struck out four and gave up ten hits. He gave way to freshman lefty Brandon Winfield (Ripon, WI) in the eighth. Winfield calmly picked up his first career save, giving up just one hit in his two innings. He struck out one.
Rockford out-hit Marian 11-10 and both teams left ten runners on base.
Porcaro led the offense going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Kent Lentz (Oxford, WI) added a pair of bunt singles.
In game two, Blum threw perhaps one of the best games of his career. He went 7.2 innings and scattered seven hits while striking out seven. He gave up just one earned run and only walked one. Cory Martin (Beaver Dam, WI) picked up the save, striking out two in his 1.1 innings. He didn't allow a hit.
Beau Burgert (Oshkosh, WI) gave Marian 1-0 lead in the third with a RBI-double. They took advantage of a big Regent error in the fourth to plate a pair to make it 3-0.
Rockford scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings, but the Sabre pitching staff got them to strand runners in scoring position each inning.
Porcaro had another big game at the plate, going 3-for-4. Burgert had a pair of hits, while Martin had a pair of bunt singles.
The wins broke an eight-game losing streak against the Regents.
Marian is now 6-6 overall and 3-1 in the Northern Athletics Conference. They are back in action again on Saturday, as they will host MSOE at 12:00 PM at Herr-Baker Field.
