Poor defense hurts Marian vs. Lakeland

(Sheboygan, WI) - Marian University dropped a pair of games on Sunday at Lakeland College. The Sabres committed ten errors in the doubleheader and fell 8-7 in game one and 4-3 in eleven innings in game two. Marian is now 13-16 overall and 10-8 in the NAC.

In game one, Marian tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth as Matt Schroeder doubled in Garrett Dorn. The Muskies answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs on two hits and a pair of errors. Marian made it 5-2 in the fifth as Ryan Hiller delivered a RBI-single.

Marian then tied the game at 5-5 in the seventh as they plated three runs. Dorn drove in a run with a single and Alex Larsen and Kent Lentz drove in runs on groundouts. 

Once again, the Muskies had an answer in the bottom of the inning as they made it 8-5, scoring all their runs after two outs. Marian could have got out of the inning unharmed, but committed an error, allowing the three runs to score.

In the eighth, Marian made it 8-7 as Dorn came up with another RBI-single. Marian also scored on a wild pitch. The Sabres had a chance for more, but stranded runners on first and second with just one out.

The offense was led by Dorn, as he was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and RBIs. Hiller also collected a pair of hits.

Mitchell Gardner took the loss, but gave up just three earned runs in his 6.1 innings.

In the finale, Lakeland led 2-0 going into the eighth. In the top of the inning, Dorn singled in Will Martin to cut the deficit to one. Then, in the ninth, Marian took a 3-2 lead as Hiller singled in Mitchell Andrus and Lentz.

The Sabres couldn't shut it down in the bottom of the ninth though as the Muskies scored a run without recording a hit.

In the eleventh, Marian stranded a runner on second. In the bottom of the inning, the Muskies won it on a RBI-double.

Both teams had eight hits and Martin led Marian with a pair of hits.

Sam Forkert was solid in his 8.1 innings. He gave up three runs (one earned) on five hits.. He struck out six and walked three. After pitching 8.1 innings on Saturday, Cory Martin took the loss in relief. He gave up three hits in his two innings.
