(Fond du Lac, WI) - In a crucial set of games on Tuesday evening, Marian University defeated Benedictine University 5-4 in game one, but fell 10-1 in the nightcap. Both teams are now 11-9 in the Northern Athletics Conference and still alive for the 2011 NAC Tournament.
Marian took a 2-0 lead in the first in game one as
Anthony Porcaro scored on a wild pitch and
Jace Unrein drove in
Tim Holtz.
The Eagles took a 3-2 lead in the fifth, but Marian responded with three big runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh.
Kent Lentz walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Porcaro walked and
Will Martin doubled in Lentz and moved Porcaro to third. Unrein then singled up the middle and plated both runs.
Jake Schaffhauser shut down the Eagles in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. In the ninth,the Eagles led off with a single. Schaffhauser then got a strikeout, but the next Eagle hitter doubled, putting runners on second and third.
After the Sabres went to the bullpen, a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. Marian then called upon
Cory Martin. He gave up a run on a sacrifice fly, but got a ground ball on the next play to earn the save.
Schaffhauser picked up his first collegiate victory to move to 1-1. He pitched 3.1 innings and gave up just one run. Martin's save was his third of the season.
Unrein led the offense, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
The Eagles out-hit Marian 12-7 in the game.
Game two started out well for Marian as they took a 1-0 lead in the first. Things changed quickly however, as the Eagles answered with eight runs in the top of the second.
Marian didn't score the rest of the way as they stranded thirteen runners.
Adam Diedrich was solid in relief as he gave up three runs in his 7.2 innings of work. He struck out a career-high eight hitters.

Ryan Seifert and Holtz all had a pair of hits for Marian.
The Sabres are back in action again tomorrow, as they will host Ripon College. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 PM at Herr-Baker Field.
