OSHKOSH, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's soccer team couldn't overcome the high-powered offense of UW-Oshkosh as the hosts put up six first half goals en route to a 7-0 non-conference victory over the Sabres on a chilly night at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium Wednesday evening, Sept. 14.
The Titans converted on a barrage of scoring chances while the Sabres struggled to find some of their own. Marian was out-shot in the contest, 27-5, while UW-Oshkosh also controlled the edge corner kicks, 5-0. The Sabres fall to 0-4-1 on the young season while the Titans improve to 2-1-1.
The first goal of the match came just moment after kickoff as UW-Oshkosh's Hans Becker headed in a timely cross from Tony Starnes 37 seconds into the contest for his first goal of the season. Just six-and-a-half minutes later, Danny Karrels worked in a well-placed strike for his second goal of the year. The first six goals by the home team would come in the first 35 minutes of action.
Marian sophomore
David Reinke tallied two shots for the royal blue and scarlet. Starting goalkeeper,
Nathan Thiery allowed six of the seven goals, but made nine stops in 45 minutes of action.
The Sabres will enjoy a couple days off before returning to action for a conference home tilt against Wisconsin Lutheran in what will be the front-end of a men's and women's doubleheader on homecoming, Saturday, Sept. 17. Kickoff is slated for Noon at Smith Fields.
