Aitken Post-game Interview

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Another victory was highlighted by a six-goal effort for the Marian University men's hockey team as it defeated visiting Northland College, 6-4, and won for the fifth straight time against an MCHA opponent, this afternoon, Dec. 1.

Ashton Reinboldt finished with another three-point performance after scoring a goal and adding an assist in today's victory, giving the junior six points in the series. Freshman Brett Campbell joined him with a three-point effort as well, scoring a goal and two assists. It was Campbell's goal late in the second period that went down as the game-winner after giving the Sabres a commanding 5-1 lead.

Marian improved to 6-5-1 overall, 6-2-0 in the MCHA with the win, while Northland dropped to 1-7-0 (1-7-0 MCHA) with the loss.

The Sabres came out in a flurry in the first period, posting three scores, including Tyler Klein's team-leading seventh of the season in the first 1:20 of the game. Brian Berger and Brett Campbell were credited with assists as they built up the scoring opportunity. Aaron Leonard and Ashton Reinboldt added a goal each to give Marian a 3-0 lead at the first intermission.

Dubetz recorded his second goal in as many nights when he redirected a Matt Berger shot on the doorstep at the 11:27 mark of the second period. Thomas Nosella also got the assist as Marian pushed its lead to 4-0.

On a Northland power play, Mike Mikulan cleaned up a rebound off a Josh Baker save with two seconds left on the Kyle L'Arrivee penalty to cut the deficit to 4-1.

Campbell made it 5-1 with 3:12 left in the second period. Brian Berger and Nosella got the assists. For Nosella, it was his fourth of the series.

The third period has been unto kind to the Sabres as of late and it was the same story tonight after Northland tallied three goals in the first 6:46 of the period to make the game very interesting. In the midst of the LumberJacks' scoring run, Marian's Mitch Kriz scored his third goal of the season. It came during a Sabre power play with a scorching shot from the point.

Marian denied Northland another chance the rest of the way despite the LumberJacks pulling their goalie, Mason Riley, for the last 1:39. Baker made 24 saves en route to his fourth win of the season, while Riley took the loss in spite of 29 saves.

The Sabres will be challenged next weekend as nationally-ranked MSOE comes calling for a home-and-home series. Both teams will face off in Milwaukee Friday, Dec. 7, and in Fond du Lac Saturday, Dec. 8. The final home game of the season's first half will also feature Marian's "Ice Out Breast Cancer" game with efforts being raised to promote breast cancer awareness.

Saturday's puck will drop at 4 p.m.
