FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Four goals helped the Marian University men's hockey team back into the win column this evening, Feb. 10, en route to a 4-3 home victory over Northland College inside Blue Line Family Ice Center.
Brendan Roberts,
Chris Thompson,
Brian Berger and
Dakota Dubetz each found the back of the net as the Sabres came back from a pair of one goal deficits to knock off the LumberJacks tonight. A strong second period made the difference when Marian netted three unanswered goals after falling behind 2-1. It was all it needed en route to the win.
Randy Willis made 30 saves in net for the royal blue and white, earning his third victory of the year and leading Marian to a 10-8-4 overall record with a 9-5-3 mark in MCHA play. Meanwhile, Ian Perrier also made 30 stops, but the 'Jacks fell to 6-13-3 (5-10-2 MCHA).
After more than 18 minutes of scoreless hockey, Northland's Chad Liley converted a power play scoring try for the 'Jacks at the 18:19 mark in the first period. However, just 57 seconds later, Roberts tied the game on a
Bryce Wilson assist to send the game knotted up into the first intermission.
More than halfway into the second period, Kraig Wright gave the 'Jacks a 2-1 lead on his 11th goal of the year, and NC's second power play goal of the game, at the 11:25 mark. But then the Sabres embarked on a scoring spree, ignited by Thompson's fourth goal of the season at the 12:14 mark on assists by
Mike McCurtain and
Aaron Leonard.
A little more than three minutes later,
Brian Berger found the net with his 14th goal of the year to give the Sabres their first lead at 3-2. His brother
Matt Berger and
Tanner Burton were credited with the assists on the goal at the 15:54 mark.
Less than two minutes later, Dubetz hammered home his 11th of the season on a power play conversion at the 17:42 mark. Assists were credited to
Tommy Fitzpatrick and
Thomas Nosella. It gave Marian a commanding 4-2 edge after 40 minutes.
David Little made the lead a bit uneasy as he scored at the 11:08 mark of the third period to cut the deficit to 4-3, but the Sabres held off the 'Jacks despite being outshot 13-4 in the third.
Marian and Northland will be back at it again tomorrow afternoon for a 4 p.m. start.
