Tanner Burton entered the day with two goals and left with five after recording his first career hat trick in leading the Marian University men's hockey team to a 4-1 win and series sweep over visiting Northland College this afternoon, Feb. 11.
The Sabres outshot the LumberJacks by an eye-popping, 46-17, margin. Burton tallied eight shots, while netting the game's first goal and the game-winner, adding later an empty-net score with 21 seconds left in the third period. Junior captain
Dakota Dubetz fired a game-high 14 shots on goal and finished with two assists in the game.
Marian improved to 11-8-4 overall, 10-5-3 in the MCHA, while Northland fell to 6-14-3 (5-11-2 MCHA).
At the 9:23 mark of the first period, Burton hammered home a power play goal on assists by
Matt Berger and
Chris Thompson to take a slim advantage into the first intermission.
Cody Hasbargen then tied the score for the 'Jacks shortly into the second period before Burton added his second at the 18:26 mark to put the Sabres in front for good. It was a power play goal for MU, which utilized a 5-on-3 try. Thompson and
Brian Berger earned assists.
Bryce Wilson made it 3-1 at the 12:28 mark in the third period on assists by Dubetz and
Brendan Roberts and Burton tallied the empty-net score just before the final horn hit.
The Sabres will return to action next Friday-Saturday, Feb. 17-18, as they take on Concordia Wisconsin in a home-and-home series. Marian and CUW will open up the final series of the regular season in Mequon Friday night at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's regular season finale will be a 7 p.m. start.
