FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Marian University left-hander
Sam Forkert collected his second honor of the week as he was named to D3baseball.com's National Team of the Week thanks to his no-hit effort against Finlandia last Sunday, March 25. This comes just two days after earning Northern Athletics Conference Pitcher of the Week honors.
The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll. This is the fourth weekly listing of the 2012 season, the inaugural season of recognizing the top performance at each of thirteen positions from the previous week.
Forkert tossed the sixth no-hitter in Marian history Sunday afternoon, striking out a career-high 12 batters and walking five in a dominating performance to defeat Finlandia, 1-0.
The Sister Bay, Wis. native heightened the drama in the last inning as Finlandia drew a leadoff walk and advanced the runner to third base with two outs. But Forkert rose to the occasion and struck out the final batter to secure the win and a place in the Marian record books. In the process, he lowered his ERA to under a run at 0.96 through three starts this year and boosted his strikeout total to a league-leading 24 punch outs.
He will earn his next start in Marian's next game, taking his talents on the road to face Wisconsin Lutheran in the conference opener this Saturday, March 31.
