Box Scores - Game 1, Game 2
MADISON, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University baseball team earned a doubleheader split with host Edgewood College, dropping game one, 4-1, before taking game two, 6-1, in Northern Athletics Conference play at Stampfl Field Saturday, April 14. The Sabres ended the weekend with a much-needed 3-1 record to move to 14-10 overall, 7-5 in league action.
Hits were hard to come by for the Royal Blue and Scarlet in game one as Edgewood hurler Miles Mayer allowed just two of them for his first win of the year.
Cory Martin gave the Sabres the bounce back performance they were looking for in game two as he scattered 10 hits, but allowed just a run in a 6-1 victory.
Garrett Dorn led the Marian offensive attack with a 3-for-7 combined effort at the plate.
Edgewood got on the board early with a first inning run on a pair of doubles, the second of which came off the bat of Mike Selvaggi to score Ryan Walker, who led of the game with a double for the Eagles.
In the third, Selvaggi struck again with a run-scoring single through the left side after
Sam Forkert allowed two to reach base via walks. Forkert would settle down and the Sabres would get run back in the fourth.
Anthony Porcaro singled to left and
Josh Gruenke walked to put the Sabres in business. A well-executed sacrifice bunt by Dorn then put both runners in scoring position for
John Cetnar. The senior then grounded out to short, but a run came into score. Another groundout would bring what looked to be a big inning at first to an end.
Forkert (2-2) then settled into a groove as he finished the day with 10 strikeouts, his second start with 10 or more this season. He struck out a career-high 12 en route to a no-hitter against Finlandia back on March 25. The sophomore allowed two unearned runs in the fifth, but Mayer (1-3) kept the Marian offense at bay on the way to the 4-1 win.
In game two, the bats started to heat up as Dorn, Gruenke and
Will Martin each recorded multi-hit games in support of
Cory Martin, who earned his first win of the season after a stellar performance in which he scattered eight hits and allowed just a run in 7.1 innings of work.
After a scoreless first, the Sabres plated two in the second inning.
Casey Schreiner homered for the second straight day with a solo blast to lead off the frame.
Matt Bromley then drove in
Will Martin on a groundout for the second score.
Cory Martin retired the first seven batters he faced before Jake Thome put an end to the streak with a double down the right-field line. He would eventually come around to score to make it a 2-1 game.
Insurance would come for the Sabres in the form of two run-scoring hits by Dorn and
Will Martin to make the score 4-1 after five innings. Marian would add a run in the sixth and another in the eighth to make the final outcome.
Brandon Winfield pitched the final inning and two-thirds to close the door.
With a 7-5 league ledger, the Sabres are now in sole possession of sixth place with 10 NAC contests left to be played. The top-six teams make the conference tournament, which is hosted by Marian, May 10-12.
The Sabres will be back in action this Tuesday, April 17, to play host to Carthage in a non-conference doubleheader slated for 3 p.m.
