Box Score RIVER FOREST, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's soccer team used a 12th-minute goal by junior Laura Maly and held the highest-scoring team in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference to a single goal en route to earning an ever-important point on the road with 1-1 draw against host Concordia University Chicago at Concordia Stadium, this afternoon, Oct. 13.
Both teams were back in action quickly following shutout road victories yesterday as today's match was a make-up from a rainout back on Oct. 5. Much like their win over Elmhurst on the road last Tuesday, the Sabre backline stood tall today by forcing the Cougars to try their hand at shots from long distance. It was indicative by the fact that the Cougars held a 28-13 shot advantage at the end of regulation, but the Sabres held the edge in shots on goal, 8-7.
Marian remains unbeaten in its last five contests, moving to 5-6-1 overall, 3-2-1 in the NACC with the draw. Meanwhile, CUC moves to 9-2-2 (3-2-1 NACC).
The Sabres jumped ahead early in the first half when Maly found the back of the net in the 12th minute. It was Maly's fourth goal of the season and second in as many days.
Towards the end of the half, Concordia Chicago gained a little momentum and a flurry of offensive opportunities after four consecutive corner kicks and a free kick from just outside the penalty area in the final three minutes.
Marian withstood every bit of it and took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Shortly into the second half, the Cougars answered with the equalizer in the 51st minute. Ahissa Bustos netted her third of the year on an assist from Alyssa Soulis.
Tied at the end of regulation, neither team was able to put a shot on goal in the first 10 minutes of overtime. However, in the second overtime, Mikaila Johnson forced CUC keeper, Callie Hasselbring, to make a save, while Marian keeper, Caitlyn Rosenberger, made two saves and watched a 30-yard strike from Natalie Weinhold go off the crossbar.
Rosenberger made seven saves to preserve the tie.
Marian continues its season-long four-match road trip with a visit to Concordia University Wisconsin (7-5, 5-1 NACC) in Mequon, this Wednesday, Oct. 16. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
