FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) - Even with the new faces to the Sabres this season, the message was clear from the very start. The past two seasons, MSOE was the team responsible for ending Marian's season, a memory that is still apparent in the many of the juniors and seniors minds'. Friday night's story would end a bit differently than past chapters, as the Sabres dropped four unanswered goals on MSOE to cruise to a 4-0 victory.
Riding the momentum of their win last Saturday against Lawrence, the Sabres opened up Friday's game with high octane. All four lines were flying about the ice, and it was only a matter of time before that speed would translate into a goal.
With Marian on the penalty kill, senior Tyler Klein stepped forward and broke up a play at the blue line, and proceeded to push it out towards center ice. Sophomore Ben Morgan then engaged his hyperdrive and took the puck to the house, flipping his backhanded shot top shelf past a sprawling Nick Kohn.
In the second, Morgan quickly darted about the net and tucked in his second of the night, catching the Blue Line by surprise. Marian had held a number of two goal leads this season already, but as was seen on Saturday, its not enough to just have a two-goal lead, for its commonly known as the worst lead in sports.
Just minutes after Morgan double the Sabre lead, Klein went streaking through the neutral zone, sneaking behind the unsuspecting defense. Morgan threaded the needle and split the 'D', springing Klein on a breakaway. The Fargo native sniped his shot through the wickets of Kohn, giving Marian a three goal lead.
A slashing penalty late in the third period gave the Sabres another opportunity to increase their already substantial lead. Freshman Brodie Jamieson received the puck in the slot and flung it on net. Kuhn was there to make the save, but was unable to corral the rebound, where junior Rjay Berra was there and ready to pounce.
When the final whistle blew, senior Josh Baker collected his first win of the season, and his first shutout since Feb. 8, 2013.
The Sabres improved to 2-3 in the NCHA and will be on the hunt for the series sweep tomorrow at the Kern Center in Milwaukee. Puck drops at 7 p.m.
