Box Score SUPERIOR, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) - It was just two seasons ago that senior Tyler Klein was wearing black and gold for UW-Superior. On Friday though, he shined bright in his black and blue en route to a marvelous night for the Fargo native. When the dust settled, the Sabres would look up at the scoreboard and witness a 7-3 win over the Yellowjackets.
"A lot of those guys are still my friends, and I start my career there, so there was definitely a lot of emotions before the game," senior Tyler Klein said.
A scoreless first period led many to believe this would be a close, hard fought game. In just his second start of his career, freshman Mike Baldwin kept UW-Superior off the board, turning away all 13 shots he saw in the first.
In between periods, the sleeping giant would be awoken. At 3:51 into the second period, Jordan Neduzak broke the scoreless tie for UW-Superior. The one goal lead would stand for just under seven minutes before Marian took over.
"Had a little bit of a shaky start as Superior carried the physical play," Head Coach AJ Aitken said. "Baldwin kept us in the game early as he made some big saves and was solid all night."
Senior Robbie Bailey scored at 10:18 of the second to level the score on an assist from senior Tanner Burton. A minute and a half later, freshman Brodie Jamieson tallied his first collegeiate goal as senior Ashton Reinboldt and Burton would gather the assists. Once the train left the station, there was no slowing it down.
"Turning point of the game was our response to giving up the first goal," Aitken said. "Bailey came back and ripped a shot high glove-side to put us on the board."
Junior Brian Berger would tally one more goal for Marian in the second to head to the locker room with the 3-1 lead.
Jamieson opened up the third period with his second goal of the night just 86 seconds in on an assist from senior Tyler Klein and freshman Derek Perl.
For Klein, the game was a homecoming of sorts, as he played his first two years of collegiate hockey for UW-Superior. After earning an assist, Klein would breakout to score back-to-back goals at 8:28 and 9:54 to increase the Sabre lead to 6-1.
"I'm so proud of our team and their effort tonight," Klein said. "I'm very happy to come out of there with a win like that."
The Yellowjackets would get two back as Nick Stoskopf and Pat Dalbec scored at 11:59 and 15:01 respectively.
Klein would return to put the icing on the cake and seal the win for Marian, scoring at 15:49 to wrap-up his hat-trick and four point night.
"Klein capitalized on all his chances tonight and I'm very proud of him," Aitken said.
The Sabres were outshot 43-30, but Baldwin was up to the task, earning his second win of the year in the process.
Marian will aim to use the momentum built by their four game winning streak as they head to Stevens Point tomorrow to take on the fifth ranked Pointers. They were 6-1 winners over MSOE on Friday night to move to 7-0 on the year.
If you can't make it to the game, Stevens Point will have live stats and video, as well as Marian's very own "Jock Jams", will have the call on Sabre Vision.
