Sabres Clinch MCHA North Division With Win Over Northland

Box Score

ASHLAND, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Junior goalie Josh Baker made 21 saves and recorded his fifth career shutout, while Tyler Klein scored two goals for the second straight game as the Marian University men's hockey team defeated host Northland College, 3-0, and clinched its fourth straight MCHA North Division title, this evening, Feb. 8.

Freshman Warren Carter put the Sabres on top in the first period, Klein added the insurance and Baker was brilliant once again as the Sabres inched closer to clinching their fourth straight MCHA North Division title.

Marian improved to 11-10-1 overall, 10-7-0 MCHA with the win, while Northland fell to 8-13-1 (6-11-0 MCHA) with the loss.

Marian wasted no time with a Carter goal at the 2:41 mark of the first period. Mitch Kriz and Kyle L'Arrivee assisted on the score that proved to be the game-winner as the Sabres never looked back.

After a scoreless second period, Klein needed just 51 seconds into the third period to score his 13th goal of the season, a power play tally, to give the Sabres some insurance. Dakota Dubetz was credited with the assist.

Klein then added his second goal of the game and team-leading 14th of the season with just 59 seconds left, an empty-netter that made it 3-0.

Marian outshot Northland, 38-21, in the contest and won for the fourth time in the last five games. The Sabres were 1-for-4 on the power play, while the LumberJacks were 0-for-2.

With Finlandia's overtime win over Lawrence tonight, the Sabres extended its lead by two points to make it an eight-point cushion in the North and clinched their fourth straight division title and a first round bye in the Harris Cup Playoffs.

The Sabres will go for the season sweep tomorrow as both teams match-up in a 3:05 p.m. start in Ashland.
