Men's Hockey Takes Season Series From Northland

Box Score

ASHLAND, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com)Mitch Kriz and Robbie Bailey tallied two goals apiece and the Marian University men's hockey team won for the fourth straight time en route to a season series sweep of Northland College, 6-2, this afternoon, Feb. 9.

The Sabres outscored the LumberJacks 9-2 in the two-game set this weekend and Kriz and Bailey got the scoring started early, spotting their team a 2-0 advantage 6:59 into the first period. They each added another goal in the second period, breaking a 2-2 tie before Warren Carter and Tyler Klein provided insurance tallies to secure the victory.

Marian improved to 12-10-1 overall, 11-7-0 in the MCHA with the win, while Northland fell to 8-14-1 (6-12-0 MCHA) with the loss.

After Kriz and Bailey gave the Sabres an early lead, the LumberJacks' Louis Labbe and Matt Lennon were able to break through the Sabre defense, each scoring their 10th goals of the season to tie the game at 2-2 by the first intermission.

Just 2:06 into the second period, Bailey scored the go-ahead goal and eventual game-winner with his fifth goal of the season to make it 3-2. Brendan Roberts and Aaron Leonard were credited with assists. Kriz then tacked on Marian's second power-play goal of the night to make it 4-2 by the end of the frame. Roberts and Brett Campbell each dished out their second assists of the night.

In the third period, Carter scored an unassisted tally at the 13:11 mark, his third goal of the year, prior to Klein notching his 15th goal of the season. Brian Berger and Dakota Dubetz picked up assists with the final score.

Kriz recorded a team-best three points in the win and the Sabres head into the final weekend of conference play looking to pick up even more steam going into the playoffs.

Marian will meet Concordia University Wisconsin in a home-and-home series beginning Friday, Feb. 15, in Fond du Lac, followed by the regular season finale Saturday, Feb. 16, in Mequon. Friday will also be Senior Night with a start time slated for 7 p.m.
