Box Score TUCSON, Ariz. (SabreAthletics.com) – An eight-run fourth inning highlighted an impressive come-from-behind win for the Marian University baseball team as it defeated Cornell College, 15-7, in a non-conference match-up at the Tucson Invitational Games at the Kino Sports Complex, this afternoon, March 10.
The Sabres battled back from a 6-2 deficit early on to claim its third win in four games to open the season. Cole Miklavcic, Ty Gellinger and Chad Langley each recorded two hits apiece in the win. Brett Barger came on in relief to pick up his first win of the season.
Marian improved to 3-1 overall with the win, while Cornell dropped to 1-4 with the loss.
Sabre starter, Trevor Nicholson, ran into trouble in the first inning as a trio of walks led to three runs for the Rams. Buddy Mattern capped the scoring with a two-run double to right center. He would finish 3-for-4 on the day.
The Marian bats finally came to life, but not until Cornell tacked on another run in the third to lead 4-0.
Will Martin added a run scoring single in the bottom of the third to make the score 4-2 Cornell.
The Rams then scored two more in the fourth to increase its lead back to four runs before the Sabres found their rhythm. Marian scored eight runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, and another in the sixth to break the game wide open.
In the fourth, Cornell starter Chuck Rocker ran out of gas, walking three straight Sabres before hitting Adam Ryan with a pitch. Three fielding errors would ensue, which led to six unearned runs in the frame and a 10-6 lead for Marian.
Gellinger drew an RBI walk in the fifth, followed by a run scoring single by Garrett Dorn to increase the advantage to 12-6.
Leading 13-7 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Sabres added two more insurance tallies thanks to a Martin RBI groundout and Gellinger's third RBI of the day.
Barger went 5.2 innings in relief, allowing three runs on eight hits, while striking out four and walking just one.
Marian will have the day off tomorrow before taking on Miles City Community College in a varsity reserve game at 10 a.m. local time, noon central, followed by a 3 p.m. local time start against Wesleyan University (Conn.) Tuesday, March 12.
