Box Score TUCSON, Ariz. (SabreAthletics.com) – Garret Dorn went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and the Marian University baseball team was victorious over Cornell College, 11-3, beating the Rams for the second time on its Arizona trip inside Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium, this afternoon, March 13.
Dorn's homer came in the midst of a five-run second inning that saw the Sabres take a 7-1 lead and never look back. Sophomore Bryce Taylor worked out of a couple jams and got the win after a solid five-inning effort. Earl Vorpagel and Brandon Winfield were effective in relief as Marian scored 10 or more runs for the third game in a row and fourth time this season.
Marian improved to 4-2 with the win, while Cornell dropped to 2-5 with the loss.
The Sabres took an early lead with two runs in the first. Cole Miklavcic led off the game with a hit-by-pitch before Will Martin singled to third base to put Marian in business. After a double steal put both runners in scoring position, Ty Gellinger and Dorn then drove home a run each with RBI groundouts.
Leading 2-0, Taylor gave up a leadoff single to Joe Gerace, but redeemed himself by picking him off for the first out. Two batters later, he hit Zach Rogers with a pitch and he eventually came around to score on a single to center by Beriah Quick to make it 2-1 after an inning.
In the second, Matt Bromley doubled and Tony Grannis tripled him home to give Marian a 3-1 advantage. After Miklavcic grounded out to third for the second out of the inning, three straight Marian batters reached base.
Martin singled home Grannis and then stole second base to get into scoring position. Gellinger then doubled in Martin to set up Dorn's at bat.
With Gellinger on second, Dorn took Kyle Stennes' pitch and deposited it over the left center field fence, clearing everything, including the 375 sign on the 10-foot wall, and landing on top of the berm some 15 feet beyond the fence.
That made the score 7-1 and it was all Taylor and the Sabres needed to hold off the Rams.
The right hander allowed an unearned run in the third and another in the fourth that cut the deficit to 7-3, but Cornell was unable to get any closer.
Chad Langley scored on a Chase Eagan sacrifice fly in the eighth to make it 8-3.
In the ninth, Marian tacked on three more insurance tallies, capped by a Langley two-run single to give the Sabres an 11-3 lead.
Vorpagel worked three innings and retired the final eight batters he faced in his collegiate debut. Winfield then came on in the ninth and sat down the final three batters he faced following a leadoff single to Gerace, who went 4-for-4 on the day.
The Sabres will take on Bethany Lutheran College tomorrow, March 14, in a 2 p.m. local time start, 4 p.m. central. Live stats and audio will be available via www.sabreathletics.com.
