Box Score 2 TUCSON, Ariz. (SabreAthletics.com) – A doubleheader sweep over Northland College highlighted an impressive start for the Marian University baseball team at the Kino Sports Complex, this afternoon, March 8. The Sabres defeated the LumberJacks, 4-2, in game one and, 19-2, in game two.
Junior Sam Forkert took a no-hitter into the third inning of game one before giving up a pair of third-inning runs. He would deny any further damage en route to the complete game victory. Bryce Taylor followed with a solid start, going five strong innings in a rout over Northland. Chad Langley went 5-for-7 in both games combined with a double and four RBIs.
Marian improved to 2-0 overall, while Northland fell to 1-5.
Game one featured a three-run first inning for Marian, in which Cole Miklavcic tripled to lead off the bottom of the inning. He came around to score on Will Martin's grounder to short and was safe on a fielding error.
Marian made the 'Jacks pay as Garrett Dorn's run-scoring single drove in Martin, followed by a sacrifice fly by Casey Schreiner to bring home Dorn.
Miklavcic then singled home Ryan Blise in the second inning to give the Sabres a 4-0 advantage. It was more than enough for Forkert to bring home the victory. The Sister Bay native sat down the first seven 'Jacks in order before a Martin error allowed Nathan Smith to reach first. It would prove costly as Smith eventually scored on a Matt Lennon two-run single to right center.
Forkert settled down after that, retiring 10 of the next 11 Northland batters on the way to victory. He allowed just two unearned runs on three hits, while striking out seven and walking only one over seven innings pitched.
In game two, the bats stayed hot. The Sabres had 13 straight batters reach base in a 12-run fourth inning. Amidst the streak, nine were singles with two hit batters and a couple walks mixed in. Schreiner's sacrifice fly capped the scoring to make it 19-1.
Langley had two singles and three RBIs in the frame, finishing the game with a 3-for-4 effort, two runs scored and four RBIs. Ty Gellinger finished 3-for-4 in the game with three runs scored and three RBIs. Miklavcic, Dorn, and Adam Ryan also finished with multiple hits in game two. Dorn added four runs scored in the win as well.
Taylor moved to 1-0 after his season debut produced just two runs allowed (1 earned) on three hits, while striking out five and walking four.
The Sabres will be back in action tomorrow, taking on St. Mary's University of Minnesota at 10 a.m. mountain time, 11 a.m. central. Live stats will be available.
