Box Score 2 MEQUON, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – More uninviting weather altered schedule and travel plans for the Marian University baseball team, but it didn't let it shift its focus as the Sabres posted 50 runs in a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader sweep over Maranatha Baptist Bible College this evening, April 12.
Marian was originally set to travel to Watertown, but wet field conditions prohibited Maranatha's field from being playable. So, the contests were relocated to the home of Concordia University Wisconsin at Kapco Field in Mequon. The Sabres failed to score in the first, but then set the tone for the rest of the day with a 15-run second inning in game one.
The Sabres went on to win game one, 25-9, before taking game two, 25-0. The 25-run outbursts were the most for a Marian team since a 31-6 victory over those same Crusaders back on May 9, 2005.
The sweep improves Marian's record to 11-5 overall, 5-1 in the NAC, while the Crusaders fell to 2-9 (0-6 NAC).
The Sabres were held scoreless in the first inning of game one, but then registered a 15-run inning in the second frame. A total of 18 batters came to the plate. Adam Ryan saw three plate appearances and committed the first and third outs with a walk in his second plate appearance. Nine hits led to the 15 runs and the Sabres finished with 15 total hits in the contest.
Ty Gellinger went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Matt Bromley also collected three hits in four at-bats and came around to score four times.
Trevor Nicholson earned his first collegiate win after striking out seven batters and allowing just two runs on four hits over five innings of work.
In game two, Fond du Lac native Hunter Veness turned in a dominating effort in his second collegiate start and was in line for the win until an injury derailed him. Veness had allowed just one hit with two outs in the fifth, but was forced to leave before finishing the five innings required for a starting pitcher to earn a win. He finished with six strikeouts.
Meanwhile, Mitch Huston came on in relief and faced the minimum over an inning and a third, while striking out two to earn his first win of the year.
Offensively, the Sabre bats stayed hot as they posted a crooked number in all seven innings of game two en route to the 25-0 shutout.
Leading 4-0 after three innings, Marian broke the score wide open with nine runs in the fourth, three more in the fifth and a seven-spot in the sixth to make it 23-0.
Cole Miklavcic, Ryan Fisher, TJ McCoy, Chad Langley and Chase Eagan all recorded multi-hit games with two hits apiece. The Sabres pounded out 18 hits in all in the blowout win, their highest output of the season.
The Sabres are scheduled to host Edgewood College tomorrow, April 13. There will be a special tailgate scheduled that will honor Division III Week and National Student-Athlete Day from 3-4:30 p.m. at Herr-Baker Field. Game one is slated for 2 p.m., weather pending.
