FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to visiting and Northern Athletics Conference leader, Concordia University Wisconsin, at Center Court Tennis Club, Saturday morning, April 13.
The Falcons showed their dominance with a convincing road victory over the Sabres. Marian's #2 doubles team of Elan Solvik and Andrew Bales threatened to steal a win by winning four games, but came up short, falling 8-4 to their counterparts to lead off the day.
Concordia Wisconsin improved to 7-8 overall, 4-0 in the NAC with the win. Meanwhile, Marian was left still seeking its first win of the year after falling to 0-7 (0-5 NAC) with the loss.
The Sabres were left playing from behind from the very start as they were forced to withdraw from #6 singles and #3 doubles with only five players competing on the day.
Solvik got his first start at #1 singles and took a game in the first set, but wound up dropping a 6-1, 6-0 decision to CUW's Russell Johnson. Bales took two games in the second set against #2 Taylor Shaffer, but also fell in straight sets 6-0, 6-2.
Sam Maetzold, Josh Heup and Josh Baker all put forth strong efforts, but were overmatched by CUW's #3-#5 singles players.
The Sabres will seek their first win of the year when they take on non-conference foe, Ripon College, in a match-up Friday, April 19. First serve is set for 6 p.m. at Center Court Tennis Club.
