FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's tennis team had its best showing of the season, but it wasn't enough to knock off visiting Lakeland College in Northern Athletics Conference action inside Center Court Tennis Club, Wednesday night, April 17. The Muskies came away with the 6-3 victory.
Rob Ogden won both of his matches at #1 singles and #1 doubles, while Elan Solvik picked up a victory at #2 singles. Andrew Bales dropped a tight three-set match as did Jose Valencia, which was the difference in the team score.
The Muskies improve to 2-5 overall, 2-3 in the NAC, while the Sabres dropped to 0-8 (0-6 NAC).
The doubles matches started off the night with Ogden teaming up with Bales at #1 doubles to take down Chris Meyer and Paul Elzinga, 8-4. Lakeland ended up taking the edge into singles play by winning #2 and #3 doubles by scores of 8-3 and 8-1, respectively.
Ogden then got the Sabres even with a straight sets victory at #1 singles, defeating Meyer, 6-0, 6-0. Solvik gave Marian the lead back with a win at #2 singles, beating Greg Boknevitz, 6-4, 6-2.
Bales avenged a first set loss to win the second set 6-1 at #3 singles. He used the momentum to get out to a good start, but couldn't hang on as he fell 7-6 in a third set tie-break, dropping the match 5-7, 6-1, 6-7.
At #4 singles, Valencia fell to Elzinga in three sets, while Brandon Robinson and Carlos Rodriguez picked up decisive wins over Sam Maetzold and Josh Heup at #5 and #6 singles, respectively.
The Sabres will be back in action this Friday, April 19, taking on Ripon College at 6 p.m. inside Center Court Tennis Club.
