FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's tennis team split a pair of Northern Athletics Conference matches and picked up its first victory of the season when it defeated Rockford College, 7-2, at the Fond du Lac High School Tennis Courts, this afternoon, April 20.
The Sabres had been making strides of late and it showed as they picked up the convincing win over Rockford in the nightcap on Saturday. Aurora displayed why it is one of the top teams in the NAC with a 9-0 win in the morning.
Marian improved to 1-11 overall, 1-7 in the NAC. Meanwhile, Aurora improved to 6-7 (5-1 NAC), while Rockford fell to 0-8 (0-8 NAC).
Against the Regents, the Sabres took five-of-six singles matches and two-of-three doubles.
The #1 doubles combo of Rob Ogden and Andrew Bales pitched a shutout against their Regent counterparts, winning 8-0 to get the Sabres off to a rousing start.
Elan Solvik and Jose Valencia won at #2 doubles, 8-2, before Sam Maetzold and Josh Heup fell just short in an 8-6 battle.
At singles, Rob Ogden overcame his #1 singles opponent in straight sets, as did the rest of the top-five singles players for the Sabres, including Maetzold, who took down his opponent by a score of 6-2, 6-0 at #5 singles.
Marian hosts Edgewood College in the regular season finale Wednesday, April 24. First serve is set for 3:30 p.m.
