Box Score 2 FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Brandon Winfield's first career complete-game shutout in game one and Matt Bromley's walk-off single in game two led the Marian University baseball team to a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader sweep over visiting Edgewood College at Herr-Baker Field, this evening, April 23.
The Sabres, who trailed the fourth-place Eagles in the conference standings by two games going into today, leave tied for fifth place after the sweep. Winfield struck out 11 Eagles with the shutout in game one. In game two, Bromley stole the spotlight, but Chad Langley recorded his second four-hit game of the season and moved into the league-lead in batting average.
The Sabre improved to 14-10 overall, 8-6 in the NAC, while the Eagles fell to 10-18 (8-6 NAC).
Winfield started game one off by striking out the side in the first inning. He added two more punch outs in both the second and third innings and didn't allow an Edgewood batter to reach third base until the fifth inning.
Meanwhile, The Sabres struck early with two runs in the first on a two-run single to center field by freshman Adam Ryan. In the second, Marian would go up 3-0 after Chase Eagan led off with a single and later scored on Cole Miklavcic's sacrifice fly to center.
An unearned run in the seventh gave the Sabres another insurance tally and Winfield more than enough to finish the job.
Just one other batter reached third for the Eagles and that came in the top of the ninth when Sean Thompson reached 90 feet from potentially spoiling the shutout after leading off with a single up the middle. Winfield then sat down the next three batters, while putting a fitting end to the game with a strikeout of Marc Ostrowski.
Winfield picked up his second win of the year and lowered his ERA to a miniscule 1.49, which ranks second in the league.
In game two, Marian starter Hunter Veness gave up a run in the first after Ryan O'Dell drove in Andrew Lauritzen, who led off the game with a double to left. But the Sabres didn't trail for long as the first three batters reached and eventually scored in the bottom of the first.
The score remained 3-1 until the third when an Adam Ryan single to left field made it 4-1 Sabres.
After allowing an unearned run in the fifth, Veness ran into more trouble in the sixth when Edgewood tied it with a two-run double by Thompson to make it 4-4.
Jeff Thomas relieved the freshman and got the next two hitters out on just four pitches.
In the bottom of the inning, Eagan led off with one of his three hits in the game and later scored on Langley's single to left to give the Sabres back the lead, 5-4.
Edgewood then tied it again in the top of the seventh on Alex Jaskulski's double to right, scoring O'Dell from second base, but Jaskulski was thrown out as Will Martin's relay from shallow right field got him in time as he was trying to stretch it into a triple.
Marian threatened in the bottom of the frame, but wound up leaving the bases loaded on Ryan Seifert's groundout to second. That would bring up the top of the order in the eighth and the first two hitters in Miklavcic and Ty Gellinger would come through by reaching base.
With nobody out, the Sabres felt good with Langley, who had four hits on the day already, coming to the plate. However, he grounded one to second and Edgewood second baseman Kody Parman started the double play try. While the turn was being made, the speedy Miklavcic tried to take advantage and was thrown out at home, resulting in a 4-6-3-2 triple play.
Junior Jake Schaffhauser then came on in relief for the Sabres and breezed through the bottom third of the Eagle lineup in just five pitches.
He cruised through the top of the ninth as well and that set up a chance the game-winner in the bottom of the inning.
Garrett Dorn led off the frame with a walk against the new Eagle hurler, Aaron Schmidt. Ryan Blise advanced him to second with a sacrifice bunt before Martin reached on an error by the Edgewood shortstop.
The would bring up Bromley with runners at the corners and just one out and the junior sent a 2-1 pitch to the right center field gap, giving the pinch runner Ryan Fisher plenty of time to scamper home for the winning run.
The Sabres will look to keep the momentum going and continue climbing up the NAC standings as they take on Lakeland College in a make-up from April 15. The Sabres and Muskies started game one of a doubleheader, but it was halted as rain made conditions unplayable with Marian leading 5-0 in the fifth inning. The game will be resumed with game two to follow. Game one is scheduled to resume at 1 p.m. in Sheboygan.
