Marian Finishes Off Lakeland in Another NAC Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com)Sam Forkert and Earl Vorpagel each earned their third wins of the season, while Jake Schaffhauser picked up two saves as the Marian University baseball team completed its second sweep over a Northern Athletics Conference opponent in as many days, defeating host Lakeland College, 5-4 and 6-4, at Muskie Field, this afternoon, April 24.

Game one was continued from an April 15 meeting that was washed out with the Sabres leading 5-0 with two on, nobody out for the Muskies in the bottom of the fifth inning. Forkert resumed what he started and picked up the victory.

Vorpagel allowed four runs (3 earned) in the first four innings, but the Sabres used a six-run frame to erase the deficit and move to 16-10 overall, 10-6 in the NAC.

The completion of the first game began all the way back on April 15, and took place in Fond du Lac due to unplayable field conditions in Sheboygan. The Sabres had scored one in the first, another in the fourth and three more in the top of the fifth as the rain began to fall.

Will Martin, Ryan Blise and Chase Eagan all provided run-scoring hits to highlight the crucial fifth inning. They needed every bit of the run production they got as Lakeland (10-16, 6-9 NAC) used home field to its advantage in the continuation today.

Forkert, who picked up where he left off, allowed just a run after letting the first two batters of the inning to reach base. The junior lefty started the continuation by picking Charlie Sparrow off second base.

Tim Kuchenbecker then got the Muskies on the board with a single to right as the second batter of today's continuation. Forkert would rebound after that to strike out the next two batters to end the inning.

He would work around trouble in the sixth before retiring for the day with a run allowed on four hits, while striking out nine and working around seven walks over six innings pitched.

Brett Barger came on in relief and the Muskies tagged him for three runs, all of which were unearned and came amidst an eighth-inning rally.

Schaffhauser threw the final inning-and-a-third to pick up his first save of the season.

In game two, Vorpagel went six strong innings, but things looked shaky at the start. Lakeland got an unearned run in the first when an error by the Sabre third baseman allowed Brent Steudel to reach and the inning to continue. It led to Brady Callahan scoring on a sacrifice fly.

With the Muskies leading 2-0 after two innings, the Sabres sought a rally and got one in the third. Matt Bromley led off the frame with a walk, followed by a T.J. McCoy single through the right side. Lakeland starter Luke Mandich then struck out the next two batters before Chase Eagan came through with a two-run, two-out single to center to tie the game.

The Sabres then took the lead two batters later when Eagan scored on Garrett Dorn's double to left center. The next batter, Martin, reached on an error that extended the inning and allowed the Sabres to tack on three unearned runs to make it a 6-2 advantage.

The Muskies got one back in the bottom of the inning and cut the deficit to 6-4 with another run in the fourth.

Vorpagel settled down after that, however, facing the minimum beginning with the final two outs of the fourth on through the end of the sixth inning. Schaffhauser was then called upon for the second time today and earned the three-inning save for his second of the day.

The Sabres finished the day in sole possession of fifth place in the NAC standings and a half-game behind Rockford for fourth place. Marian will look to extend its four-game winning streak when it plays host to MSOE (5-15, 1-13 NAC) this Saturday, April 27. First pitch is slated for noon at Herr-Baker Field in Fond du Lac.
