Box Score MOORHEAD, Minn. (SabreAthletics.com) - Fans at the Moorhead Sports Center Hockey Arena were treated to an offensive shootout on Friday, Jan. 10 as Marian University and Concordia-Moorhead battled to a 4-4 tie. With one second remaining in overtime, senior Tyler Klein was awarded a penalty shot, but was denied by Chris Neamonitis, handing both squads their second tie of the season.
The line of Klein, Ben Morgan, and Rjay Berra would prove to be the steam locomotive driving the Sabre offense as three of the four goals on the night came between them. In the first period, Morgan tallied twice with Klein and Berra assisting on the first and Klein and Milnthorp assisting on the second. After Concordia-Moorhead tied things up at two thanks to two goals from Garret Hendrickson, sophomore Warren Carter scored his first goal of the year at 18:51 of the first period to give the Sabres the lead going into the second.
Once again, the Cobbers would draw the game back to even on Hendrickson's third of the night, only to be bested by Berra less than two minutes later at 6:23. Freshman Derek Perl collected his fifth assist of the season along with Klein earning his third of the night and 12th of the year.
With less than five minutes remaining in regulation, Caleb Suderman netted the game-tying goal on the power-play to send things to overtime.
Through 60 minutes of play, Cobber goaltender Chris Neamonitis turned away 18 of the 22 shots he saw, but no save would be bigger than the one he made on Klein with one second remaining in overtime.
As time was about to expire, Dave Velich was whistled for throwing the stick and the referees awarded Klein a penalty shot. Attempting to go five-hole, Klein was unable to keep the puck from going on edge and failed to get a clean shot off, allowing Neamonitis to make the save.
Freshman goaltender Mike Baldwin made 38 saves on the night keeping his team within reach at all times of grabbing the win.
The Sabres will continue their roadtrip on Saturday night as they head to St. Cloud, Minn. to take on St. John's University. The Johnnies were 5-3 winners over UW-Stout on Friday night. The puck will drop at 7 p.m. and the game can be seen via webcast courtesy of St. John's University.
