Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) - It had been 26 power-play attempts since the Sabres last scored a goal, but on Friday, January 24, freshman Brodie Jamieson had enough of the drought and scored not once, but twice on the power-play, helping to lift the Sabres to a 4-1 win over Northland College.
In addition to their power-play drought, the Sabres had fallen behind, surrendering the first goal of the game. Head Coach AJ Aitken shared the importance of scoring first.
"We need a good start," Aitken said. "Get hungry and go for the first goal and then go from there."
At 11:45 of the first period, the Sabres went to the power-play for the second time. Just over a minute into the man-advantage, Jamieson broke the scoreless tie and gave the Sabres their first power-play goal since Nov. 22 against UW-Superior. Junior Brian Berger and senior Tanner Burton collected helper's on the goal for Marian.
Playing with the lead for once, the Sabres had a number of chances in the rest of the first and second periods, but before they could add to their lead, Northland responded with ten seconds to go in the second period.
As a pile-up began to form in front of the Marian goal, Mike Milulan found the loose puck and pushed it past senior Josh Baker to tie the game at one.
Talking to his team before the third period, Aitken knew that his team would have a challenge in front of them.
"I told the guys that it wasn't going to be easy," Aitken said of the third period that lay ahead. "We needed a big effort to get the win and that's exactly what we got."
At 5:49 of the third period, Jamieson doubled his goal total for the night, scoring again on the power-play. This time, it was junior Aaron Leonard combining with Burton for the assists on the play.
Shortly after the Sabres gained the lead, senior Matt Williams was whistled for hooking. Berger knocked down a pass attempt from Northland and sprung sophomore Brett Campbell free in the neutral zone where he used his speed to earn a break-away.
Faking to his backhand, Campbell got Northland goaltender Mason Riley moving and was able to quickly pull it back to his forehand to beat Riley blocker-side.
Sitting now with a two-goal lead, the play began to open up in the neutral zone with Northland trying to stretch the Marian defense. The defensive corps would not be fooled, however, and it would be Marian who would eventually score with three minutes left in the third.
Sophomore Ben Morgan found himself in scoring position and beat Riley upstairs to give the Sabres a comfortable three-goal lead. Williams and freshman Derek Perl added assists on Morgan's goal.
Baker turned in a strong performance in net, stopping 27 of the 28 shots he faced, earning his third win of the year.
With the win, the Sabres earn two necessary standings' points in the NCHA that will come into play in just a few short weeks. Marian trails Concordia Wis. by three points in the standings, and with a win tomorrow can pull to within one.
During the first intermission of tomorrow's game, cancer survivors will be recognized on the ice as a part of this weekend's "Stick It To Cancer" event, co-sponsored by Marian University and Agnesian HealthCare.
