Second Half Surge Leads to Comeback Win Over Ripon

Box Score

RIPON, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) - The Marian University women's basketball team outscored host Ripon College, 24-9, over the final 11 minutes to erase a 14-point halftime defecit and register a 54-49 come-from-behind win inside Wyman Gymnasium on the road, this evening, Nov. 25.

Senior Sarah Olewinski was a difference-maker as Marian's lone double-digit scorer, recording a game-high 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting. She totaled 16 points in the second half alone following some halftime adjustments by Head Coach Bill Peters.

Defense also went through some key adjustments in the second half as the Sabres turned up the intensity on their man-to-man full court pressure, which caused trouble for the Red Hawks. With the tighter defense, the Red Hawks made only seven of their 31 shots and committed eight turnovers, while scoring only 17 points after leading 32-18 at halftime.

"In the second half, we played a tight half-court defense that we continued into a full court which got them really out of rhythm," said Head Coach Bill Peters. "We would eat up 7 or 8 second on their side, which took away that much time for them to get on their offense."

The Sabres had their own struggles early on due to foul trouble, committing their seventh foul of the half with 10 minutes remaining. The Red Hawks took advantage from the free-throw line, going 13-of-18 in the first half, while the Sabres were just 0-for-1.

Emma McDonald was the first half difference for the Red Hawks, scoring 15 of the team's 32 points by going 5-for-7 from the field. With the Sabres tightening defense in the second half, McDonald was held to two points. Nicole Herkert was the Red Hawks' leading scorer in the second half with with four points.

With the Sabres down 44-37 with 7 minutes remaining, an 11-0 run gained Marian a 4-point lead. The Sabres protected their lead in the final minutes to come away with their third straight win to start the season.

"I'm proud that they battled for the full 40 minutes of the game and it means a lot for us to come away with these wins," said Peters.

This is the first time since 1999 that the Sabres have defeated the Red Hawks, dropping the last four meetings with the last taking place in 2004.

The win also brings the Sabres to 3-0 to start the season for the first time since 2011. The Sabres will look to make it four straight when they travel to Dominican this Saturday, Nov. 29. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
