Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.Com) - An early lead by the Pointers proved to be too much as the Marian University men's hockey team fell 2-1 today, Dec. 13, at the Blue Line Family Ice Center.
The Pointers came out in the first period with an aggressive offensive attack that seemed to click right away. Senior Kevin Gibson put the Pointers on the board first, finishing off an opportunity set up by Alex Kromm and Evan Dixon 12 minutes in. The shot was one of eight by Stevens Point in the early minutes, as they were outshooting the Sabres, 8-4.
Three minutes and three missed shots later, the Pointers were at it again. Junior Nick D'Avolio started the play off skating through the Marian defenders, eventually finding teammate Alex Brooks who finished the job. The Pointer defense held the Sabres scoreless in the first as goalie Brandon Jaeger stopped all eight Sabre shots that came his way.
Mike Gudmandson tightened things up throughout the next two periods, blocking the next 15 shots that came his way in to keep the Sabres in contention.
The Marian offense started to put things together in the second period finally connecting on a play started by Rjay Berra and Warren Carter. Brodie Jamieson was able to finish the deal and put the Sabres on the board on his fourth goal of the season.
It was a 2-1 score going into the third with the Sabres in pursuit to even the game. The Sabres got off nine shots in the final twenty minutes but were unable to find the back of the net to fall to the Pointers.
The Sabres (6-7) fall a game below .500 with the set back, but look to take advantage of the month long break and turn things around on the road against UW-Eau Claire on January, 9. The puck is set to drop at 7 pm.
