Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (SabreAthletics.com) - Saturday, Feb. 15 saw Marian's seven-game win streak come to an end, as St. Scholastica was victorious 3-1.
The table had been set prior to puck drop for the Sabres on Saturday night. Just minutes before Marian took the ice, Adrian scored an overtime winner over Lake Forest, giving the Sabres an opportunity to jump up to third place in the NCHA and host the quarterfinal round at the Blue Line.
The coaching staff shared with the team that they'd see a different St. Scholastica team than what they saw last night. Sophomore Ben Morgan helped Marian get to an early lead, scoring at 6:39 of the first period. Freshman Scott Milnthorp got the play started in the neutral zone and fed Morgan in the slot.
Marian's lead would be erased at 14:55 of the first on goal from Alex Valenti. Neither team could grab an advantage until halfway through the third period. At 10:12, Dave Williams pushed home a loose puck in front of senior net minder Josh Baker to give St. Scholastica their first lead of the weekend.
Saturday night's game was noticeably more physical, with the advantage leaning towards the Saints. Marian had a number of chances to solve St. Scholastica goaltender Tyler Bruggeman, but were unable to best him.
With their backs to the wall, Marian had no choice but to pull Baker in favor of an extra attacker. St. Scholastica sealed the victory with an empty-net goal, giving them the insurance they needed. The Sabres had some quality chances down the stretch, Bruggeman stood tall, stopping everything he saw after the first period.
The loss brings an end to Marian's seven-game winning streak and puts them in fifth place in the NCHA. Marian will now travel to Lake Forest next weekend for the quarterfinals. Game details have yet to be released by the NCHA.
