Box Score 2 LAKE FOREST, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) - After winning Friday night's quarterfinal match with Lake Forest, Marian University returned to Illinois on Saturday with hopes of claiming victory once again. The Foresters used the momentum from their overtime victory to eliminate Marian from the playoffs, winning in the second period of the mini-game.
After a scoreless first period, sophomore Warren Carter notched his fourth goal of the year, unassisted, at 1:42 of the second period to give Marian the first lead of the night. Lake Forest would answer less than two minutes later as Andrew Stein tallied his seventh goal of the year after the two sides went down a man.
Jordan Bruce picked an opportune time to score his first goal of the year, coming at 8:52 of the third period. With Marian's chances of exnending their season dwindling, freshman Jacob Ryd pull off a highlight-worthy goal at 15:06 to tie things at two and send the game to overtime.
Jason McAloon became the hero for Lake Forest as he tallied a power-play goal at 3:41 of overtime to give the Foresters the 3-2 victory and force a mini-game to decide who would advance to next week's semifinal against St. Norbert.
In the mini-game format, the teams play a regulation length opening period. If, after one period, the score is tied, they then enter into a sudden death overtime. On Saturday night, neither team could gain the upper hand, sending the mini-game to an additional period.
Lake Forest's Ben Certo bested the Sabres for the last time in the 2013-14 season, sending home the mini-game winner and advancing Lake Forest to the semifinal of the Harris Cup Playoffs.
Although Marian ends their season at 12-13-2, there is plenty to look forward to for the future of the program. Head Coach AJ Aitken and his staff have been successful in recruiting talented players from some of the most competitive junior leagues to don the blue and white, so expect next year's team to be just as competitive.
Saturday marks the end of seven careers as Robbie Bailey, Ashton Reinboldt, Matt Berger, Tyler Klein, Tanner Burton, Josh Baker, and Chris Frederickson played in their last collegiate game. These student-athletes have set the bar for the future of Marian Hockey and the program will benefit from the time they spent wearing the blue and white.
