Sabres' Bats Silenced on Day One of Arizona Trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TUCSON, Ariz. (SabreAthletics.com) - After finally arriving in Arizona late Friday night, the Marian softball squad opened their Tucson Invitational schedule Saturday morning with a twin-bill against Augsburg College and Central College. A 3-0 loss to Augsburg was followed up with a 14-0 defeat as Marian dropped to 1-5 on the year.

In the first game, Augsburg scored three times over three separate innings to put distance between them and Marian. Freshman Sara Terrian went 2-for-3 with two singles while sophomore Emily Gorges pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on 12 hits.

The Sabres had their best chance of the game in the bottom of the sixth after Terrian lined a single to center field with one out. Sophomore Amber Johnson and freshman Charlotee Pegram follow up with singles of their own to load the bases, but a strikeout by freshman Danielle Dorn and a fly out by sophomore Nikki Jakel ended the threat for Marian.

With their backs to the wall and needing three runs to tie in the bottom of the 7th, the Sabres couldn't find a way to advance freshman Lydia Cloud from first after she reached on a error, handing them their second straight shutout, 3-0.

Less than 15 minutes later, Marian took the field against national powerhouse Central College. The Dutch jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first aided by back-to-back singles. On the mound, Haycraft pitched a gem, keeping the Sabres off-balance and off the basepaths. In five innings, Haycraft struck out one and allowed one hit.

Central added five runs in the third, three in the fourth and three in the fifth to jump out to a 14-0 lead.

"It's hard to win a game when you put zeroes on the board," Head Coach Ashley Steltenpohl said after her team was shutout for the third consecutive game. "We're not coming up with big its to drive in runs. Once that happens, I'm confident that we'll start to put together some wins."

Marian will play two games on Sunday, first against Central at 5:30 p.m. CDT followed by UW-Eau Claire at 8:00 p.m. CDT.
