Baseball Ends Spring Trip at 5-5 with Loss to UW-La Crosse

Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz. (SabreAthletics.com) - Marian wrapped up their spring trip to Arizona on Thursday, March 20 against UW-La Crosse, a team who had their number less than 48 hours earlier. A 19-0 setback on Tuesday was still fresh in the minds of the Sabres, but Thursday would be much of the same as UW-La Crosse cruised to 17-3 victory.

Before the Sabres could even pick up their bats, the game had gotten away from them. The Eagles started off the game with six straight hits, scoring six runs before Marian could record an out in the inning. It would be a short day for starting pitcher Earl Vorpagel as he was lifted in the second inning after allow eight runs on 10 hits.

The second inning brought much of the same destruction for Marian as seven more runs crossed the plate on five hits and two defensive errors.

For Marian, it didn't seem to matter who they trotted out to the mound, UW-La Crosse was poised and ready to swing the lumber, resulting in 16 hits on the day.

The Sabres wrap up their spring trip in Arizona with an even keel .500 record. With a few different bounces of the ball, Marian could've turned the tides for the better.

Despite the 5-5 record, there are a number of Marian players who are off to a hot start offensively. Sophomore Tony Grannis has made the most of his playing time this week, hitting 7-for-13 in four games. Elsewhere around the lineup, returning All-NACC selection Chad Langley has torn the cover off the ball in his first 10 games. The Sheboygan native leads Marian in batting average (.405), hits (15), and doubles (5). Leadoff man Cole Miklavcic has been doing his job at the dish, posting a  .500 on base percentage, drawing eight walks, and hitting at a .389 clip.

Marian is scheduled to open the NACC portion of their schedule a week from Saturday at Aurora, weather permitting.
