Baseball Earns Split with Aurora in Kenosha

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

KENOSHA, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The offense pounded out 27 combined hits in the doubleheader, but the Marian University baseball team had to settle for a split after Aurora University claimed a 7-6 walk-off win in game one, followed by a convincing 8-4 Sabre victory in game two. The site was moved to Carthage College due to unplayable field conditions in Aurora, Tuesday, April 1.

Sophomore Ty Gellinger turned in a pair of impressive performances, going 7-for-9 on the afternoon combined, including 4-for-4 in game one. The Sabres (8-6, 3-1 NACC) registered double-digit hit totals in each contest with 17 hits coming in the game one setback.

Game one saw the Sabres take a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Spartans (5-12, 1-1 NACC) got two and sent the game to extra innings. After sitting the Sabres down in order in the 10th, the Spartans came back and strung together a pair of singles before sophomore Austin Hansen issued two straight walks to bring in the winning run.

Marian out-hit Aurora 17-12 in the contest and both teams left nine runners on base. The Spartans earned their fifth straight win in the series thanks to clutch hitting and scoring four runs in the final three innings.

In game two, the Sabres put an end to their winless drought against the Spartans with a five-run fourth inning to take a 7-4 lead. Marian received run-scoring hits from Gellinger and Chad Langley, followed by a bases-loaded walk from T.J. McCoy to cap the inning. Casey Schreiner added an insurance tally in the ninth with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Tanner Biwer, in his third appearance of the season, turned in a gem. The sophomore, who missed all of last season from injury, went seven and two-thirds innings in relief to record the win. Biwer came on in relief of Trevor Nicholson with the Sabres trailing in the second and allowed just a run on six hits.

It marked the first victory for the Sabres over rival Aurora since April 2010 when they registered a 17-15 victory on the road.

The Sabres will play their fifth game in three days when head to Ripon College for a single, nine-inning affair scheduled for 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2. Live stats will be provided via www.sabreathletics.com.
