Box Score 2 FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University baseball team totaled 20 runs on 30 hits in a doubleheader sweep over visiting Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference foe MSOE, winning 9-8 and 11-7, at Herr-Baker Field this afternoon, April 19.
Junior Jordan DeBoer and sophomore Tony Grannis led the Sabres (12-9, 6-4 NACC) with six and five hits, respectively, as they led a potent Marian offense to a sweep over the visiting Raiders (10-15, 6-8 NACC).
Game one saw the most improbable of victories for Marian as it overcame six errors and 11 walks by the pitching staff. Marian trailed 8-2 before scoring two runs in the sixth and five in the seventh to win it 9-8. In game two, the Sabres battled back from a 6-4 deficit, scoring five runs in the seventh inning to prevail 11-7.
In game one, an erratic start by pitcher Sam Forkert led to three first-inning runs for the Raiders. Forkert was charged with eight runs (2 earned) on only five hits, but walked seven batters to go with his six strikeouts over five innings pitched. His teammates would have his back, though, as relievers Brett Barger and Earl Vorpagel were very effective on the mound to close out the win.
Both combined to allow just a hit over four innings. Barger picked up the win to move to 3-0, while Vorpagel recorded his second save of the year.
The offense pounded out 15 hits, led by a 4-for-5 effort from DeBoer and another three hits by Grannis. Marian finally got to MSOE starter Luke Yogerst in the sixth inning with two runs. The back-breaker came in the seventh when the Sabres tallied five runs with the first six batters of the inning reaching base on five hits and a walk.
Senior Chad Langley also made his return to the lineup after missing four games due to injury, going 1-for-5 with a key two-run double that tied the game at 8-8 in the seventh inning. Grannis came through with the game-winning RBI single up the middle that put the Sabres up, 9-8.
In game two, Marian trailed 6-4 in the fifth when it six straight batters reached base safely to start the inning. It led to five runs and the Sabres regained a 9-6 lead and didn't look back from there.
Marian starter Brandon Winfield saw his fair share of up-and-downs, but hung tough to record his fourth straight victory and moved to 3-0 against NACC opponents. Austin Hansen picked his first save of the season with an inning and two-thirds scoreless in relief.
Ty Gellinger registered three hits and three runs in the nightcap, while Adam Ryan went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
MSOE starter Brandon McCumber allowed nine runs in five innings of work to take the loss. Marian's 6-4 NACC record propels it into a tie for third place with Wisconsin Lutheran College.
The Sabres will be back in action for another NACC doubleheader at Concordia University Wisconsin (11-14, 4-8 NACC) on Monday, April 21. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Kapco Field in Mequon.
