ROCKFORD, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) -- The Marian University men's tennis team picked up its first victory of the season when it defeated Rockford University, 7-2, to make up for a loss earlier in the day to host Aurora University on the road, today, April 19.
The Sabres (1-8, 1-7 NACC) snapped a season-long losing streak with a convincing victory in the nightcap over the Regents (0-7, 0-7 NACC). Marian's doubles combos got the team off to a great start by sweeping through their opponents. The #1 doubles tandem of Elan Solvik and Jose Valencia took down their counterparts by a score of 8-3, as did the #2 doubles team of Spencer Braswell and Mike Kunes.
The #3 doubles team of Sam Maetzold and Payton Trammel benefited from a withdraw from the Regents.
In singles competition Valencia and Braswell picked up the win against their opponents at #2 and #3, both needing coming out ahead in the tie-break with Valencia going away 6-1, 7-6 and Braswell 7-5, 6-2.
Maetzold and Trammel recorded victories by virtue of withdraw. At #1 and #4 singles, Solvik and Kunes played tight matches, but came up short.
Earlier in the day, the Sabres suffered a 9-0 setback to first-place Aurora University (6-4, 6-1 NACC)
The Sabres will be back in action for their last conference match before the NACC Tournament, Wednesday, April 23, when they travel to Edgewood College. Start time is set for 4 p.m.
