Box Score 2 MEQUON, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Entering the day tied for third in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference standings, the Marian University baseball team still sits fourth despite getting swept by league nemesis Concordia University Wisconsin by scores of 4-3 and 11-7, at Kapco Park this evening, April 21.
The Falcons (13-14, 6-8 NACC) won their eighth straight over the Sabres (12-11, 6-6 NACC) and seventh straight overall with the sweep, while Marian had its three-game winning streak snapped. Defensive miscues finally cost the Sabres in game one as just one of CUW's four runs was earned. Marian skated by MSOE in its previous two games despite 10 combined errors in the sweep on Saturday. Today, they committed eight and the results weren't so kind.
Game one saw Marian junior Bryce Taylor go seven strong innings on the mound, allowing three runs (1 earned) on four hits, while striking out three and walking none. Ty Gellinger, Tyler Oren and Chase Eagan each registered two hits in the one-run loss.
The winning run for CUW came on a wild pitch with one out in the bottom of the ninth. The Sabres had their fair share of chances, leaving 14 runners on base in the contest, including the bases loaded on three separate occasions.
In game two, the Falcons overcame a 3-2 deficit in the fourth to take a 6-3 advantage that would grow to as much as a 11-4 before the Sabres added three runs in the top of the ninth. CUW tallied 16 hits in the win after just five total in game one. The leadoff hitter, Thomas, led the way with a 3-for-5 effort with two runs scored and an RBI.
Marian will be back in action this Saturday, April 26, when it plays host to Benedictine in a pivotal NACC showdown at Herr-Baker Field in Fond du Lac. First pitch is set for noon.
