Box Score 2 KENOSHA, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University baseball team piled up 21 runs on 22 hits in a doubleheader sweep over host Carthage College and snapped an 11-game skid against its non-conference opponent in the process with wins of 12-7 and 9-3, this evening, April 24.
Seven Sabres registered multiple hits on the day, led by junior Jordan DeBoer and freshman Tommy Dugandzic, who totaled three hits each. Trevor Nicholson pitched five strong innings to earn the game one victory, while Hunter Veness tossed a complete-game, falling just two outs shy of his first-career shutout.
After falling behind in game one, the Sabres (14-11) scored seven runs in the second inning, highlighted by two, two-run home runs by Casey Seelow and Chad Langley. Both long balls were to left field and marked the first career round-trippers for each.
Then, leading 9-7 heading into the top of the seventh, Matt Bromley homered for the second time in three games, supplying a three-run shot to left-center field for good measure. DeBoer went 3-for-4 in the game with three RBIs and a run scored. Cole Miklavcic turned in a 2-for-4 effort with an RBI and two runs scored from the top of the lineup.
Nicholson allowed six runs (5 earned) on nine hits and struck out four Red Men (15-16) to earn the win. Austin Hansen came on for the final inning and two-thirds to pick up his second save of the season.
In game two, Marian was able to jump out to the early lead with six runs over the first three innings. With one out in the third, the Sabres had five straight batters reach base and it led to a four-run frame. Dugandzic drove home a pair with a single through the left side. The freshman turned in his second consecutive 3-for-3 effort, adding two runs and two RBIs as well.
While the offense was doing its thing, Veness was doing his. The sophomore cruised through the first six innings of the ballgame, allowing just two hits over that span. He ran into trouble in the seventh, allowing three runs on a Reed Hero three-run homer to left with one out in the frame.
The Fond du Lac native settled down after that to close out the game and finish what he started, allowing the three runs on just four hits, while striking out three and walking three.
Marian defeated Carthage for the first time since April 10, 2005 when the Sabres handed the then-12th-ranked Red Men an 11-5 loss in Fond du Lac.
The Sabres take their momentum offensively into Saturday's league showdown with second-place Benedictine (17-12, 11-3 NACC) at home. Game one first pitch is set for noon. Live stats and video will be available via www.SabreAthletics.com.
