Box Score 2 VERONA, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Senior Brandon Winfield spun yet another gem to carry the Marian University baseball team to a 5-0 game two victory and doubleheader split against host Edgewood College at Stampfl Field, this afternoon, April 5.
Winfield moved to 3-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play after scattering nine hits in a complete-game shutout in game two. His performance was a tremendous response to one that slipped away earlier in the day. Marian (9-7, 4-2 NACC) squandered a 4-2 lead late in game one and allowed three runs on zero hits and two errors in a disastrous eighth inning to fall 5-4.
In the process, the Sabres lost their senior star, Chad Langley, who was involved in a collision at first base and was taken to the hospital as a result. Langley, an All-NACC First Team selection a year ago and NACC Player of the Week (March 24) earlier this season, was released from the hospital and is on his way to a speedy recovery. He is currently batting .390 with a team-high 13 RBIs.
Three Sabres registered two hits apiece in the game two win, including Tony Grannis, who finished the day 4-for-9 with a double and two RBIs. Adam Ryan registered three hits in both games combined.
Sam Forkert (2-1) took the game one loss despite a solid effort on the mound after going 7 2/3 innings and allowing just two earned runs on four hits, while striking out seven and walking four.
The Sabres outhit the Eagles (5-12, 1-1 NACC) in both games, 8-4 in game one and 13-9 in game two. AJ Verhage (2-2) earned the win for the Eagles in game one with 1 1/3 innings for scoreless relief.
Marian will be back in action tomorrow, April 6, as they take on No.7-ranked Concordia University Chicago (16-2, 4-0 NACC) at a neutral site. Game one is set for 1 p.m. at Woodside Sports Complex in Mauston, Wis.
