Box Score 4 BELOIT, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) -- The Marian University women's volleyball team was unable to repeat as Beloit Buc Blast Tournament champions this past weekend, but put together some impressive individual performances, while registering a convincing win over host Beloit. Freshman Amber Baker represented the Sabres as a member on the All-Tournament team.
Ripon 3, Marian 1 (25-20, 25-16, 15-25, 25-15)
Marian saw Ripon as its first opponent and struggled despite some effective play from Baker, who dished out 32 assists, and Jessica Roberts, who added 15 kills. Marian was able to win one set after the Red Hawks took the first two, but productivity slipped in the fourth set resulting in a match win for Ripon.
MSOE 3, Marian 1 (25-17, 24-26, 25-23, 25-14)
Sabres brought a bit more energy to the table against MSOE. After losing the first set 25-17, the Sabres responded with a thrilling 26-24 set win to tie the match at one. The third set was just as thrilling, but the Sabres came out on the short side, 25-23. Marian ran out of gas in the fourth set, falling 25-14. The Raiders had five players register double-digit points compared to one for the Sabres.
Marian 3, Beloit 0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-16)
Marian would bounce back after a rough day one with a win in straight sets over Beloit, giving the Buccaneers all they could handle. The Sabres took three straight sets to shut down the Buccaneers in an overall team performance to earn their first win of the year. Kathryn Braunling paced Marian with seven kills, while Roberts added six.
UW-Superior 3, Marian 1 (25-23, 27-29, 25-14, 25-19)
With momentum on Marian's side, the Sabres were hoping to turn things around, but UW-Superior had other plans. The two teams battled it out in the first two sets with both teams coming out with two-point set victories. Marian took a step back in the third set, losing by nine and giving the Yellow Jackets advantage. UW-Superior closed it out in four sets as its duel threat of Stephanie Bandelin and Vicki Vinokur combined for 29 kills.
Ripon went on to win the tournament, going 4-0 with additional wins over Alverno, Rockford, MSOE.
The Sabres will host winless Lawrence University in their home opener this Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. inside Sadoff Gymnasium.
