Box Score ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) – A Brittany Syms goal tied it up with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, but host Augustana College was able to pull through just 1:32 into the second overtime to pull out the 2-1 victory over the Marian University women's soccer team at Thorson-Lucken Field, today, Sept. 13.
It was Syms' first goal of the season and ninth of her career, coming on a great buildup late in the first half that got the Sabres (1-4) back into the game. The Vikings scored first in the 12' and then again in the 112' to clinch the win.
"It was a well fought match," Head Coach Jillian Sauer said. "Augustana has a very strong offense that our defenders handled very well. Overall, we needed to create more scoring chances as a team."
The Vikings certainly had their fair share of chances, totaling 39 shots, including 16 on goal, compared to just eight shots for Marian with four landing on frame.
Senior goalkeeper, Caitlyn Rosenberger put together another fantastic effort, making 14 saves for her fourth double-digit save performance of the season.
"Caitlyn has been phenomenal," Sauer said. "She has been so consistent and dedicated to our team's growth so far this season. As a captain, she not only leads by example, but communicates and organizes the defenders very well. She is a smart goalkeeper who makes brilliant saves. I'm extremely proud of her."
Rosenberger has accumulated 60 saves with an .882 save percentage through the team's first five games. An indication of her improved success this season, the Pewaukee native's save percentage far surpasses her career average of .819.
Augustana got on the board in the 12' with Jessica Kras' third goal of the season. It would remain 1-0 until the 80:30 mark when Syms tied the game.
The scoring play started with Laura Maly sending a ball into the attacking third. From there Gabby Solis was able to make a touch inside, creating space for Syms, who then blasted a shot that was beautifully placed over the keeper.
"We had talked about the importance of our forwards finding our [midfielders] instead of always looking to go forward," Sauer said. "By doing so, it created more movement and opportunities to find players running on or though the back line."
The Sabres look ahead to a midweek match-up with non-conference foe, Elmhurst. Marian has played four straight on the road and will make its return home for the first time since Aug. 30.
"We are looking forward to playing at home on Wednesday," Sauer said. "We have a few things we need to work on at practice this week, but the girls will be ready. Every game we have played this season has been extremely close and we continue to get better and better."
The Sabres picked up a confidence-building, 1-0, road win at Elmhurst a year ago and look to make it two in a row Wednesday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
