Box Score MILWAUKEE, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Senior Brittany Syms registered her first-career hat trick to lead the Marian University women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory on the road over host Wisconsin Lutheran College at Warrior Soccer Field, this evening, Sept. 30.
The career night gave Syms 7 goals and 16 points on the season, both career-highs, and gave Marian its 9th straight win and 7th straight shutout over the Warriors (3-7-2, 0-2-0 NACC). The Sabres dominated play with a 29-7 shot advantage, including 15-4 lead in shots on goal.
Marian goalkeeper Alysha Kallas recorded her first-career shutout with four saves as she and the Sabre backline came together to keep the Warriors at bay.
The Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario native got the scoring started in the 18' when she knocked in a rebound off a Maisie Floyd shot that was saved. Warrior keeper Rachel Sebald was able to get a hand on the shot, but deflected it right at the feet of Syms, who gave the Sabres a 1-0 lead.
In the 21', Floyd registered that elusive goal – her second of the season – with a header off a textbook Laura Maly corner kick.
The Sabres would take a 3-0 lead before halftime with Syms tallied her second of the game in the 38' on a blast from 12 yards out. The reigning All-NACC First Team selection created a one-on-one situation with Sebald and was able to give her team a commanding lead before the break.
In the second half, the Warrior defense tightened up, holding Marian without a goal until the 73' when Syms snuck a laser shot into the upper left 90 off an assist from Mikaila Johnson.
Johnson was turned aside several times tonight as she tied Syms with a whopping 5 shots on goal for the match. The 4-goal output matched a season-high for the Sabres, accomplished on two separate occassions in wins over Elmhurst and MSOE.
Marian will have a difficult next test against Concordia Chicago this Saturday, Oct. 4. The Cougars will be looking for some payback after the Sabres ended their season in the first round of the NACC tournament a year ago. Kickoff is set for noon.
