Lake Forest's Jack Lewis netted two goals, including the game-winning power-play tally at the 12:47 mark of the third period. Marian received a valiant effort from RJay Berra as he scored the team's first two goals of the game in the second period. The Sabres had a few quality chances in the final minutes, but Lake Forest came up big at the other end to deny Marian a point.
LFC took an early 2-0 lead in the first period as Luke Swardenski scored on a wrister from the right face-off dot followed by a Lewis goal in front of the net.
The Sabres would regroup at the intermission to score three times in the second period. Berra, with the puck behind the net, took a shot from a sharp angle and it ricocheted off Podolsky and into the net to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Berra then capitalized again on a well-placed centering pass from Brian Berger to tie the game at the 14:56 mark of the second period.
After Bobby Barrett gave the Foresters a 3-2 lead at the 17:20 mark, Jacob Ryd tied it up at 3-3 on an unassisted tally with 1:27 remaining in the period.
After a back-and-forth first 10 minutes of the third period, the Sabres took a penalty at the 11:49 mark that would ultimately lead to the decisive goal.
It was 58 seconds later that Lewis capitalized and gave the Foresters a 4-3 lead that would hold true to the finish.
Derek Thorogood collected a pair of grade-A opportunities that were denied in the final minute – one by a sliding Lewis to preserve the lead as Marian emptied its net for the extra man advantage.
Mike Gudmandson made 27 saves for the Sabres in the loss, while his counterpart, Leo Podolsky, made 34 in the victory.
The Sabres and Foresters will conclude the two-game set tomorrow night in Lake Forest, Illinois. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
