Box Score ASHLAND, Wisconsin (SabreAthletics.com) – Behind two goals each from Brian Berger and Warren Carter, the Marian University men's hockey team got back to its winning ways with a 4-2 win over host Northland College, tonight, Jan. 23.
Berger put the Sabres (7-11, 3-8 NCHA) on the board and tallied the eventual game-winner for his fourth goal of the year in the second period, while Carter salted the game away with his second of the game and sixth goal of the season with 49 seconds remaining in regulation. Mike Baldwin made 22 saves to pick up the victory in net.
"Much-needed win tonight," Head Coach AJ Aitken said. "We knew it wasn't going to be easy at Northland, so our goal was to play with the lead. Berger had a great game and got us on the board first. Carter has been solid for us all year and continued to get rewarded with his hard work tonight."
Berger's first goal came at the 13:40 mark of the first period with Ben Morgan being credited with the assist to make it 1-0 Sabres heading into the first intermission.
Just 4:28 into the second period, Carter found the net to give Marian a 2-0 cushion. Tanner Pagendam and Thomas Nosella got involved by chipping in helpers on the score.
The LumberJacks (2-14-2, 2-9 NCHA) shaved the deficit in half when the Sabres took a penalty just past the midway point in the second period. Drake Hunter capitalized with a power play goal at the 13:28 mark on assists by Chris Belhumeur and Ben Owens.
But Berger connected once again with Morgan to push the advantage back to two goals, giving the Sabres a 3-1 lead heading into the second intermission.
The 'Jacks made it a game again when Karson Kuntz snuck one past Baldwin at the 12:51 mark to cut it to 3-2.
The sophomore netminder honed in after that to protect the one goal lead on the way to a 22-save performance for the Sabres.
